SHOTGUN     hear the mp3

i wrote this one when i was fifteen. it dawned on me at that fragile age that women hold all the power. that the combination of our animal yearning and the honey they can dispense, they can shape our individual destiny. it started  out as just the plain fear of entrapment. before you bed down a girl, be sure. be very sure!

UNPLUGGED STUFF - pretty raw bed tracks

ALL THINGS WAITING     hear the mp3

this is my take on the bar scene. having pretty much spent my life working in and around bars, pubs, booze cans and the lot, this a view from hardened eyes.

NOVEMBER 30, 2004

Last night at Massey hall after being whipped up by constant James Brown openers Jacksoul, the Soul Generals, bedecked in fluorescent red tuxedo jackets, black bow ties, crisp white shirts and deep blue trousers marching like ants in a conga line at a soul brother barbecue, took their positions on stage.
To the left stood Guitar player Keith Jennings, the trio of 33 year Soul General veteran Fred Thomas on bass, James’s own son Jeff and David Woods also on guitars were flanked by two drummers whose names I did not catch. To the right the three piece horn section featuring band leader Hollie Farris and Jeff Watkins on sax. On risers in the rear, Ray Sturgis also on bass and a multi timbral percussionist “Spike”
With long-time James Brown announcer Danny Ray prodding the audience with “Toronto are you ready to taste the funk of the Godfather of Soul?” and the like hype, the 11 member funk machine launched into the James Brown Overture.
The Bitter Sweets, James Brown’s trio of back-up singers in neon blue took up their position dancing Motown style in perfect synchronization to the left of them all.
Then with Danny Ray and the Bitter Sweets trading the names of the hits we were about to hear and the Soul Generals playing one bar from each, we finally got to call out the man himself.
“ Are you ready for the hardest working man in show business? The man who took the wet outta sweat? Let me hear you say Jaaaaames Brooooowwwn!, Jaaaaames Brooooowwwn!, Jaaaaames Brooooowwwn!”
With that, in a gun metal grey, rhinestone lapel encrusted, studded jacket and matching pants with the shiniest platinum boots the godfather shimmied his way on stage to the roar and delight of the eager who packed the house.
What followed was a ninety minute packed show that saw the 76 year old James Brown sing and dance his way through numbers like “Make It Funky, Get Up Offa That Thing, Try Me, Get On The Good Foot ( James actually did his one footed moon slide in this one!), Please, Please, Please, I Got You.
Joining him on stage from time to time and in three costume changes were the “Dancing Stars”, two young and very nubile girls who added a bit of frenzy with every appearance and less clothing each time. The first time out, they had on full length star bedecked pants and neon blue tops. Those were replaced by skimpy stars and stripes jumpsuits and followed up with the shortest of short shorts with each cheek emblazoned with a J and a B and tiny red halters.
Also coming out twice in the night was Vegas crooner and wife of the man, Tomi Rae Brown, the auburn haired vixen in slate black who shared the vocal duties.
Standing off to the right side most of the night and dancing in time with the horns was hype man J R who at the end danced with James in the row and jump hop and push moves that took place at the three points of the stage.
During “Please Don’t Go!”, Danny Ray would come and cover James with a green sequined cape and lead him off stage, only to have the man shrug it off and run back for more. Danny would cover him again, this time with a red sequined cape complete with the “Godfather of Soul” on it and lead him off again. Again the Funk master himself would shrug it off and run back for more.
We then got “Get On Up” (like a sex machine) extended 15 minute version that ended the show.
Some would say that James Brown is sharing too much of the load by having Jeff Watkins playing long and frenetic solos on his sax, or having the Bitter Sweets handle some of the vocals, or the use of Tomi Rae as a front woman, all during which he would retreat and play the keyboards.
I say at 76 years old if I could dance on one foot for 5 minutes, that alone would be special , forget the ninety minutes of energy he gave us!
The man has his band incredibly tight and they love playing for him.
I feel lucky that I got to see it at the “Beautiful Massey Hall” as he called it, “This place has many, many special memories for me” he added. “Let’s give a hand to Massey Hall!” he asked us.
“ Let’s give a hand to James Brown!” say I.
